Hewlett Packard (better known as HP) has recently applied for trademark protection on half a dozen brandings, where they all do point towards the very high possibility of new TouchPad tablets from the world’s top computer manufacturer. To put it mildly, it means that the webOS range of TouchPad tablets will most probably see new additions, where the brandings applied for include the TouchPadFlex, TouchPadPro, TouchPadTwin, TouchPadGeo, TouchPad7 and the TouchPadGo.
Needless to say, all of them have one common point – they all carry the TouchPad name, so we could very well see 10″ models arrive in due time. What are some of the other variations that you can think of? Perhaps a hinged keyboard design, or one with flexible or a rollable display?
As with many other rumors that float around the Internet, it only makes perfect sense if one is patient enough to hear an official word from the manufacturer, and that’s exactly what we’ll do as we await for HP’s future for its TouchPad tablets.
Hewlett-Packard has announced to start sales of TouchPad from July, reported Bloomberg. Different models of the tablet with different storage capacity will be sold at a price tag varying from $499.99 (16 GB storage) to $599.99 (32 GB storage).
With the release of touchpad, the move is seen as an attempt by HP to tap into the Apple-dominated tablet market.
The sale process will commence from USA followed by the UK, Ireland, France, etc. The device will be made available for the Canada customers during mid-July.
TouchPad will come equipped with Wi-Fi technology. Users will be able to make use of this feature to get connected to the Internet through wireless hotspots. TouchPad has a 1,024 x 768 capacitive display and is powered by a 1.2-GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. The 1.6-pound TouchPad is equipped with a 1.3-megapixel webcam, gyroscope, accelerometer, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, and many other features.
The company said the future versions of the device will use AT&T’s wireless network for internet.
The main competitors of the TouchPad will be iPad, Xoom from Motorola, and PlayBook from Research in Motion Ltd. The company said that webOS operating system will make TouchPad different from its competitors.
“The platform’s unmatched features and flexibility will continue to differentiate HP products from the rest of the market for both personal and professional use. This is only the beginning of what HP’s scale can do with webOS,” said Jon Rubinstein, senior vice president at HP.

After mobile phones, the competition is hotting up for "tablets" in India with BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion (RIM) all set to launch its PlayBook in the country later this month to face the likes of Apple's iPad and Samsung's Galaxy Tab.
The Canadian firm will launch PlayBook in Indian markets and some other countries this month, sources said. According to the company's website, the PlayBook is scheduled to be launched in 16 countries, including the UK, Netherlands, Hong Kong, Australia, UAE and India.
"The price is going to be competitive with the other products and in line with the global pricing as well," they said.
The price in India could range between Rs 22,000 and Rs 32,000, depending upon its storage capacity, from 16 GB to 64 GB.
Globally, PlayBook is available at USD 499, USD 599 and USD 699 for the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions, respectively.
Since the launch of Apple's iPad, the tablet market is witnessing huge competition, with new contenders launching their devices. A tablet PC, though smaller in size, has PC-like functionalities.
Apple's rival in the computing space, Dell had launched the 'Streak' last year in India, while homegrown telecom handset makers like Spice and Olive have also launched similar devices at much lower price points.

The BlackBerry tablet has received a mixed response from the markets where it has been launched. According to reports, unlike rival iPad, which sold like hot cakes on its launch in April last year, the PlayBook just sold 50,000 copies in the first week of its launch on April 19 in the US and Canada.
BlackBerry has over one million users in India and RIM would target them.
The PlayBook is a seven-inch tablet that runs on a new operating system built by QNX Software Systems -- a RIM unit that makes software used to run everything from cars to nuclear reactors.
On a PlayBook, users can go online only using a Wi-Fi network or by synchronising the device to their BlackBerry smartphones.
According to analysts, sales in the tablet PC segment in India are expected to touch one million units over the next 12 months.
With 3G (high-speed internet services) being rolled out aggressively, the opportunity has only expanded, they said.

Don’t give yourself away with SilentCamThe shutter sound on my Google Nexus S is embarrassingly loud. A great way to use your camera without letting everyone within a 5 mile radius that you just took a photo is with SilentCam. The app can be used in place of your default camera, and simply lets you take a photo minus the annoying shutter sound.

Keep your photos organised with QuickPicQuickPic serves as a solid alternative to the native gallery app which comes with your Android phone. I’m personally not a fan of the native app’s layout. QuickPic with its list of albums, and extensive settings makes for a much more organised and user-friendly experience. You can sort your albums by name, path or date, and within each album, images can be sorted by name or date. Each image can be shared using Bluetooth, SMS, email, or through various apps.

Apply effects and share with friends with PicPlzPicPlz, which needs no introduction, is one of the most popular alternatives to the currently iOS-only Instagram. The app comes with a variety of filters including vintage, monochrome and cross processing. You can apply effects to photos you take through the app, or to those that already exist in your gallery. The final product can then be posted to PicPlz, as well as to Flickr, Facebook, Twitter and more, directly from the app. PicPlz also has an element of the social network about it. If you connect to your Twitter account, PicPlz automatically finds and follows your Twitter friends, who you can then keep up with through the photo app as well.

Camera360 is another hugely popular alternative to Instagram, which all photo buffs have probably already downloaded. The variety and quality of filters in Camera360 probably have a little something to do with how fast this app took off, reaching 6 million users in just one year.

During the scheduled blackouts that Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) conducted soon after the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, which triggered the ongoing Fukushima nuclear crisis, those within the blackout zones found they were unable to use their landline phones.
Back in the days when we used rotary landline phones, the electricity needed to power them was transmitted via telephone lines. In other words, phones didn't depend on an external power source, and could function even during power outages. However, with the increasingly common VoIP phones -- which use the Internet and are mediated by network routers set up in homes and offices -- they become useless when the power supply to those routers is cut off.
While the mammoth telephone company Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) Corp. is planning to switch over phone accounts set up during its days as the government-owned Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corp. to the VoIP system, countermeasures against power outages must be taken into account.

Meanwhile, there has been an increased buzz surrounding the possibilities of natural energy sources such as solar power and wind power since the nuclear accident at the Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant.
Both solar power and wind power generation are dependent on the weather, making not only energy output unstable, but also electrical voltage and frequency. Because transmitting large volumes of such electricity would negatively affect the quality of the overall power supply, many say that there are limitations to both solar and wind power generation.
But the inconsistencies in the volume and quality of such natural electricity can be resolved if it is stored in rechargeable batteries at homes and businesses before use.
The quality and stability of electricity supplied in Japan outperforms that of almost any other country, and blackout rates have been extremely low. As a result, there have heretofore been very few efforts to adopt an uninterruptible power-supply (UPS) system.
In the days immediately following the earthquake, flashlights and batteries disappeared from stores in the Tokyo metropolitan area. While the stable supply of electricity is the responsibility of power companies, it is necessary for us to keep, in preparation for emergency, a reserve of electricity for basic lifelines such as telephones and light ing in our homes and places of work.
There are steps being made to accommodate this need with electric car batteries. And if large-capacity batteries in homes and businesses become more widespread, it will provide momentum for the use of solar power and other natural energy sources.
The problem, then, is cost and the stability of the batteries. Research is currently being done to test new materials for the batteries. Once they are mass produced, cost per unit is sure to go down.

Dell today announced a new appliance that allows its block-based storage area network (SAN) to store file-based data under one unified management interface.
Dell made the announcement from its first Storage User Conference in Orlando.
The new Dell EqualLogic FS7500 appliance adds clustered network-attachedstorage (NAS) capability to its EqualLogic iSCSI SAN, the PS6000 and PS4000 series of storage arrays.
Unified storage offerings for small- and medium-sized businesses have been popular of late, with EMC recently announcing the integration of its Clariion SAN and Celerra NAS systems to create its VNX line of arrays. EMC's VNX line, however, is a single box.
The FS7500 can sit in front of the PS6010, PS6000 and PS4000 series SANs, acting as a gateway. The appliance supports single domain name space capability under which it is currently validated to store up to 510TB of data with file sizes of up to 4TB.
The FS7500 is integrated with EqualLogic's Group Manager storage management software, offering users a single interface for both block- and file-level data.

The appliance supports user accessible snapshots and the open Network Data Management Protocol for backup between primary and secondary storage. Each box has four 1Gbps IP ports per node for back-end iSCSI connectivity.
Dell also added Fibre Channel (FC) support to its entry-level PowerVault MD3600 platform with the MD3600f and MD3620f models. The arrays have four 8 Gbps Fibre Channel ports per controller and can connect to 64 hosts with an FC switch.
Additionally, the company announced version 5.1 of its management software, which includes enhancements for iSCSI data transport. The new software version supports networking via Data Center Bridging (DCB), a protocol that reduces packet loss for data transport over traditional Ethernet LANs to improve service in today's converged networks.
The Dell EqualLogic FS7500 and the 5.1 management firmware upgrade will be available in the third quarter of this year.

Just after Steve Jobs wrapped up his Worldwide Developer Conference Keynote, I had a chance to chat with The Wall Street Journal Digital Network’s Lauren Goode about what to take away from the big event.
This morning at Apple’s annual World Wide Developers Conference, CEO Steve Jobs and several other executives kicked off the event with a keynote that focused on iOS 5, OS X Lion and iCloud, the company’s “upcoming cloud services offering.”
Here are a few things that struck me.
1. Clearly, Apple is learning from the mobile competition.
Although Apple has had the lead in a lot of mobile areas, the new iOS 5 software picks up on a few things where the competition was ahead. The new operating system will offer improved notifications in a manner quite reminiscent of Android. Meanwhile, the new software will also be able to go straight to the camera app from the lock screen, a favorite feature of Windows Phone 7. The company is also taking over some ground previously handled by third-party applications, such as Instapaper.
2. Apple just might get sync right.
Microsoft has been trying to allow users to sync their data for a while via Windows Live Mesh and other services, but nothing they have proposed is as elegant as the iCloud service that Steve Jobs outlined on Monday. Google, meanwhile, has proposed a cloud-only approach.
But Apple’s approach seems to give users what they really want–their photos, documents and other data on all their devices, synchronized automatically while also stored locally on the device. Of course, the devil is in the details and we won’t be able to see just how effortlessly it all works until the service launches with iOS 5 this fall.
3. Apple’s Lion is interesting not just for its features, but also for how it is being distributed.
The features of Lion are interesting, particularly when compared with the also-mobile-influenced Windows 8. However, what struck me even more is the fact that Apple is distributing it in an entirely new way. Rather than sell it on discs through retailers, the new Mac OS X will come via the Mac App Store for just under $30.
