Yahoo's plan to open up the tablet reading app livestand

With new competitors surfacing in the market for reading applications, Yahoo's still-unreleased Livestand will launch in a space much more crowded than it was when it was announced.

But the technology behind the app will ensure it stands out, Yahoo's chief technical Hp hstnn-ib33 Batteries officer said this week.

"Over time, I think our ability to deliver the right content to consumers will be unparalleled," Raymie Stata said Thursday.

Reading apps designed for tablets fall into a couple of groups. In one category there are apps like Flipboard and Pulse, which scrape RSS and Web content to deliver a kind of personalized magazine. In another category there are companies like Adobe and Google, which are working to develop digital publishing suites to help traditional publishers start generating revenue from digital subscribers.

Straddling the divide is Livestand, a forthcoming tablet app that combines elements of both approaches. On one hand, it promises to give users a constantly updated reading experience tailored to their interests. On the other, it's also a publishing tool cheap laptop batteries that the company hopes will attract big industry players.

In short, Yahoo hopes that the 85 million people who read the company's news, sports and finance sites will follow that content to their tablets - and that publishers will chase them there, in hopes of generating new revenue from digital subscriptions.

The app, which is due by June, represents a new step in Yahoo's evolution from a Web portal to a media company.

"It's much more of a platform play," said Stata, who joined Yahoo in 2004 and was promoted to the CTO post last year.

Stata is shepherding Livestand through the final phase of its development. Taking an iPad out of his bag, Stata shows off a home screen that features both Livestand and the apps it hopes to supplant.

Amid the growing crowd of competitors, Stata is confident Livestand will stand out to users, for two reasons. One is speed: Livestand's technology allows for unusually fast rendering of HTML pages, leading to a faster reading experience, he said. The other reason Discount Mitac bp-8050 Battery is personalization - Yahoo helped to popularize the idea of a personalized home page, and hopes to do something similar with the tablet reading experience.
