New type of high-energy lithium batteries Knowledge

A new breed of flexible, high-energy lithium batteries is changing the shape of next-generation products.
Portable electronic devices, ranging from notebook computers to handheld medical instruments to power tools, are benefiting from steady advancements in energy density, as well as from the rise of thin-format laminate cells. For design engineers, the bottom line is that compact products with longer charge times are more achievable than ever.
"The battery industry is really booming right now," Robin Tichy, marketing manager for Micro Power Electronics, a technology integrator that specializes in the creation of custom battery packs, said in an interview with Design News. "There's a ton of research going on. If you have thin electronic applications, then lithium polymer is getting more interesting. But right now, there are a million different directions you could go in."
Indeed, makers of consumer products are doing just that. Apple Inc. has notably used laminate-style lithium polymer batteries to great advantage in the iPod and iPad, as well as in the paper-thin MacBook Air.
General Motors and Nissan are employing similar laminate-style technologies in the Volt and Leaf, while Tesla Motors is using 6,800 cylindrical lithium-ion batteries in its highly publicized Roadster. At the same time, lithium is finding a big niche in the medical industry, where cart-based instruments are giving way to handheld monitors.
One of the keys to the recent rise of lithium-ion cells is the ongoing increase in capacity. Not long ago, 2.2Amp-hour cobalt-based lithium batteries were all the rage, but in the past five years, they were replaced by lithium cells that used nickel-manganese, and then nickel-aluminum. During this march of progress, battery capacities rose to 2.6A-hr. and then 2.9A-hr.
In June, Panasonic rolled out the NCR18650A, a lithium-ion cell that again stretches battery capacity, this time to 3.1A-hr. Later this year, a few battery makers plan to move to 3.4A-hr. And 4.0A-hr. batteries in the well known 18650 form factor (cylindrical batteries slightly larger than an AA) could be out as soon as 2013, they say.
"We've tripled the energy in the same size can from 1996 to today," Dennis Malec, senior applications engineer for Panasonic, told us. "And the next-generation 4.0A-hr. battery isn't very far off."
Cylindrical cells push the envelope
Engineers say the higher-energy breed of batteries is opening new applications in countless industries, but particularly in medical. There, customers are incorporating them in portable ultrasound, portable oxygen concentrators, and portable workstations for monitoring patients. At the same time, a more traditional set of customers is still using lithium-ion as a replacement for nickel-metal hydride batteries in notebook computers, cellphones, digital cameras, and even power tools.
"It doesn't so much open up new applications as it allows the old applications to run longer," Malec says. "Take notebook computers: It allows the manufacturers to offer a broad range of options. For the low-end customer who mainly uses the notebook on a docking station, there's a cost-effective 2.2A-hr. cell. Or they can switch to a 3.1A-hr. battery and push the computing time into the six-to-eight-hour window."
For those reasons, lithium-ion has virtually taken over the mobile computing space. Since 1996, when nickel-metal hydride and lithium-ion were virtually neck and neck, a gap has slowly formed. Today, lithium-ion's energy density far surpasses that of nickel metal hydride.
"In cellphones and notebooks, lithium-ion batteries are almost the only ones being used now," Yevgen Barsukov, IP development manager for battery management systems at Texas Instruments, tells Design News.
"Pretty much everything else has been eliminated at this point."

Apple announcing 20.3 Million iPhones more than Nokia and Samsung

The first of the five biggest smartphone makers announced their results for the second quarter 2011 with Apple announcing 20.3 Million iPhones. Wow. That is a monster quarter by Apple not because it grew by 9% quarter-on-quarter (three months ago the iPhone grew by 15% quarter-on-quarter) - the reason this is superb performance, is that Apple managed the growth in both unit sales and market share - is that there was no new iPhone 5 released for late June.

So, I am tentatively projecting iPhones's market share to be 19%, up one percentage point from 18% in 1Q. Apple is now closing in on selling 1 out of every 5 smartphones on the planet. Awesome for the smartphone brand which is by far the most expensive phone among the major brands (i.e. excluding the luxury phones like Vertu and Tag Heuer etc). Apple obviously grew revenues and grew profits massively this past quarter. It also reported excellent sales in its iPads and Macs. Only iPod sales declined (being partly cannibalized by the iPhone and iPad).

    Apple Up, Nokia Tumbles

How does this set the stage for global hegemony in smartphone handset makers? It's an awesome first salvo in the battle among the big 3. We hear from every market that Nokia sales in smartphones are down. Nokia will report on Thursday. Nokia sold 24.3 Million in the first quarter but its quite likely Nokia's fall in sales will drop it below the iPhone in smartphones (they will remain the world's biggest mobile phone handset maker when we add 'dumbphones').

But yes, if Nokia reports sales that dip under the 20M level, so any smartphone sales level in the 'teens' (19M, 18M, 17M etc) then yes, iPhone will have jumped past Nokia and relegated Nokia from the top dog status in smartphone makers for the first time in smartphone history (as Nokia invented the space and has been biggest smartphone maker from the beginning up to now).

If so, it was this article who first called it on June 15, that Apple has passed Nokia in smartphone makers.

But that is before we have Samsung's numbers - they report on July 29. The gossip around Samsung talks of a monster quarter there. In 1Q 2011, Samsung sold 12.6 Million smartphones and under normal times, it would be nearly impossible for one brand to jump from under 13 Million to around 20 Million in one quarter, but these are not normal times and Samsung ships smartphones on three different operating systems: Android, Bada, Windows Phone 7.

After the Nokia smartphone customer give-away of the Stephen Elop 'windfall' when the Symbian Nokia phone sales collapsed from February, now is the time for rival smartphone makers to gobble up all those disgruntled Nokia Symbian customers. Obviously Apple has taken 1.7 Million of those. But the analysts around Samsung are estimating something around 19 Million smartphone sales for the South Korean maker. Samsung mobile phones unit CEO just yesterday released a bullish statement about the full year 2011 Samsung smartphone sales, saying that Samsung will exceed its 60 Million smartphone sales target (up from 25 Million sales in 2010 making Samsung the fastest-growing smartphone manufacturer this year). It means a Samsung 2Q could be tantalizingly close to the Apple 20.3 Million number. My gut says Sammy will not quite make it this quarter but Nomura earlier in June already called it for Samsung to have become biggest smartphone maker this quarter, so it will be very close and if they have a surprising surge, they could have done it. We'll know on July 29.

    Other Business News:

    Apple's 1.7 Million Extra Sales...

Where did the 1.7M unit sales growth come from? Apple obviously has benefitted from the Nokia give-away, but also remember RIM reported a decline in smartphone sales for Q2. And RIM's loss in BlackBerry sales was specific to major losses in the North American market (while growing international sales). So the iPhone has taken some of Blackberry's American Pie, while another part of iPhone growth came by spoiling Nokia's European Vacation. Was there also perhaps for Apple a China Syndrome, we will probably know soon as we get the various analysts reporting in and the data filtered and analyzed.

Meanwhile please remember, on the platforms for smartphones, Google's Android is by far the biggest now, and they sold about 49 Million smartphones in Q2 so yes, Android selling about 2.5x more smartphones now globally than the iPhone. So while Apple is likely now the world's biggest actual mobile phone smartphone handset maker, the operating system with most smartphones sold will continue to be, with an ever-increasing lead - Google's Android.

Quality laptop batteries shop: buy now save up 30%!

So, let's wait until we get the Nokia numbers before we formally celebrate Apple toppling Nokia from biggest smartphone crown. That is very likely to have happened now and we'll know in two days. And then we have to wait another week to find out if Apple has also taken the crown (or if it was grabbed by Samsung). But Congratulations to Cupertino! This is a MONSTER quarter once again. Full 10 out of 10 points for excellence in smartphone sales. With almost a year-old design, Apple still grows unit sales, increases revenues, increases profits, and increases market share. Excellent Apple. Truly great.

And two superb silver linings on the record-breaking quarter for Apple. We are expecting the next iPhone (maybe iPhone 4S or may be iPhone 5) and expected to be sold in late August or September. When that new iPhone comes to the market, it will be again Apple loyalists camping outside stores and long lines waiting for it. That hysteria will boost iPhone sales to a new record.

HP Movie Store have come to Hp TouchPad by bestlaptopbattery

HP has recently introduced an update that brings the HP Movie Store app online, providing users with the ability to view movies and television shows.

Owners of the TouchPad, only in the U.S. at this time, can access this update through the App Catalog. Powered by RoxioNow, the HP Movie Store, allows movie viewing in the form of rentals and purchases. The library also includes television shows in addition to movies.

Prices tend to vary, with rentals ranging from $2.99 to $3.99 and movie purchases being anywhere from $9.99 and higher, depending on the title and release date. Movie rentals are based on a 24-hour viewing period. Television shows will rent for $1.99 per episode.

This is the second app to launch for the TouchPad this week, as Amazon’s beta Kindle app was introduced to owners as functioning application rather than a teasing placeholder.

HP has finally rolled out its much-mooted Movie Store for the TouchPad. The rental service had been promised for months in the run up to the slate’s release, but only appeared as a pared down basic offering when the TouchPad launched.

Now though, US owners can get to grips with a stack of movies and TV shows. The latter can be snagged for $1.99 rental, while films start at $2.99. Alternatively, there’s an option to buy flicks from $9.95.

The attention now turns to whether a cloud music offering will also be launched for the TouchPad. If so, the tab should be well on its way to being able to compete with the raft of Google Android tablets out there, even if the iPad looks as if it will remain well out of reach.

HP is committed to creating a connected and consistent consumer experience across its broad portfolio of products," said Richard Kerris, vice president of webOS Worldwide Developer Relations, HP. "Collaborating with Rovi will ensure we deliver an entertainment experience that embodies this commitment and provides our customers with seamless access to high-quality entertainment.

Samsung launched a thinner and lighter version of Galaxy tablet

Samsung Electronics Co launched a thinner and lighter version of its Galaxy tablet in its lucrative home market, trying to chip into blockbuster sales of Apple Inc's iPad.
The Galaxy Tab 10.1 inch is an upgraded version of the 7-inch introduced in October. Priced from $500 onwards in the U.S. market, the same as the 9.7-inch iPad, it faces tough me-too competition from more than 100 devices, mostly running Google's Android operating system.
However, so far, Apple and Samsung have the market to themselves as tablets, initially viewed as Web entertainment gadget for consumers, have caught the imagination across businesses such as luxury hotels, airlines and wedding planners.
Competing products including Research In Motion's PlayBook and Motorola's Xoom have received lukewarm reviews, Hewlett Packard's TouchPad is a late entrant and Internet retailer Amazon.com Inc unveiled plans only last week to join the overcrowded market.

Apple's market-beating June-quarter sales for iPad reported on Tuesday underscore the challenge for the South Korean company. Shares in Samsung closed up 3.5 percent, boosting the market capitalisation of Asia's most valuable technology company to about $130 billion, in a strong market for technology stocks.
Apple sold 14 million iPads in the first half of this year, compared with analysts' sales estimates of about 7.5 million units for the Galaxy Tab over 2011.
"Apple's quarterly results showed again it's indeed the strongest rival to beat. Samsung will have a tough second half due to growing competition from Apple as it is set to introduce a new iPhone," said James Song, an analyst at Daewoo Securities.
    DISTANT SECOND
Samsung is Apple's nearest rival in the booming mobile device industry as it leverages its cost competitiveness and access to chips and core tablet components.
It has sharply narrowed the gap with Apple in the smartphone market, but remains a distant second in the tablet market, which research firm Gartner forecasts will surge to 108 million devices next year from an estimated 70 million in 2011.

    Other Business News:

"As our smartphone business grew very fast within a very short period of time, I believe it's just a matter of time for our tablet business to improve," J.K. Shin, head of Samsung's mobile division, told reporters.
Apple said on Tuesday that concern over iPad 2 supply constraints had eased and demand was still outstripping supply in some markets.
Samsung is leading the non-iPad camp challenging Apple, whose overall tablet market share is expected to shrink to below half in 2015 from an estimated 69 percent this year, Gartner says.
Some analysts however said Samsung faced a tough race.
"Samsung's overall software is still far behind iPad, which makes me doubt if Samsung can succeed to catch up any time soon," said Lee Min-hee, an analyst at Dongbu Securities.
"Its tablet sales were quite disappointing at around 2 million units in the first half and there's a big question mark whether Samsung can meet its target for this year."
Nomura forecast Samsung's tablet sales at 7.5 million units this year, far outpacing estimates of 2.4 million for Acer , 2 million units for Motorola and 1.4 million units for RIM.
Non-iPad tablet shipments are set to jump 134 percent next year, outpacing the overall market growth rate of 80 percent, Nomura said in a 90 page global tablets report titled "Prepare for the next course."
The sale of the Tab in Korea is Samsung's fifth launch after its U.S. debut a month ago and its sales kickoff in Indonesia, where the company says it commands a 65 percent market share. It has also launched the device in Italy and Sweden.
The Galaxy Tab 10.1 runs on Google's newest Android version and Nvidia's dual core processor Tegra 2.
Samsung faces the challenge of moving beyond being a hardware company, clever at copying ideas, to becoming more creative and better adept at software at a time when consumer gadgets are getting smarter.
The Galaxy Tab 10.1 has a bigger and brighter screen and weighs less than the iPad 2. However, it has access to more than 200,000 applications compared with over 425,000 applications from the Apple App store.
To cope with such shortcomings, Samsung equipped its Korean version with access to television and radio channels.
Samsung reiterated on Wednesday it aimed to boost tablet sales by more than five fold this year. It didn't provide specific numbers but analysts expect the company to have sold about 1.5 million units last year.

Toshiba Thrive tablet chose to fight a battle of connectivity and convenience

When Toshiba asked if we'd like to review its Android tablet, called the Thrive, we were initially a bit skeptical of the Honeycomb 3.1 device. There are so many other Android tablets on the market, so why choose this one? Especially when it's heavy?

When you're fighting the iPad on one hand and multiple Android competitors on the other, you have to stand out. Toshiba chose to fight a battle of connectivity and convenience with the Thrive, and it added full-sized HDMI, USB, and SD ports. If those things matter to you, the Thrive succeeds admirably.

    The hardware

Let's get the list of specs out of the way first:

    1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 processor
    1GB of RAM
    802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi
    Bluetooth 3.0
The choice of 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB of on-board storage
    5MP forward-facing camera
    2MP interior camera
    10.1" 16:10 screen running at 1280 x 800 pixels
Sensors & Location: Gyroscope; Accelerometer; Ambient Light Sensor; GPS; Digital Compass
Nothing jumps out as being better than the competition, but there's also nothing that's running behind. Without 3G support, this is a purely WiFi product, so if you want to surf on the go, you'll want to look elsewhere. The tablet comes in three configurations: 8GB for $429, 16GB for $479, and 32GB for $579.

The hardware weighs 1.6 pounds, which is certainly not light, but the tablet makes up for it in other ways. The back of the hardware is ribbed, soft plastic, and it feels comfortable in the hand. It's always disappointing to pick up a tablet that feels like a toy, but that's not a problem here—this is a solid piece of equipment that feels very well put together. You can even remove the back panel and swap it out with other $20 panels in different colors if you'd like something a little flashier.

    Other Business News:
    Dell latitude d620 Battery
    canon BP-512 Battery
    panasonic vw-vbg130 Battery

The battery is also easily accessible, so you can carry a backup or merely replace it with a fresh one when needed. Under heavy use, seven hours of battery life is achievable.

The back cover is textured plastic, and can be replaced by covers in different colors.
The tablet's face is a mixed bag, although many of my gripes will be personal and subject to taste. The silver badge around the camera breaks up the flow of the unit's design, and there are three LEDs on the top right section of the tablet showing power, charging status, and WiFi status. I abhor LEDs on my electronics and find the lights distracting when I'm trying to focus on the screen. Figuring out how to press the power button and the volume rocker deep enough to activate them also takes some practice; their placement is a little funky. The unit has a switch that locks the screen's location, which is a must-have feature in my opinion.

The screen looks bright and clear indoors, but like most tablets, it is nearly unusable in direct sunlight. Running at a 16:10 resolution makes viewing video and reading books slightly more comfortable than the iPad's 4:3 resolution. Here's a comparison.
