Launch of the PlayBook tablet faces mixed reception

Research in Motion executives came out in force Thursday evening in New York, playing hosts at the industry launch of the PlayBook tablet in an effort to convince market watchers and potential users that the device is a serious contender in an arena Toshiba pa3534u-1bas batteries,Dell latitude e6400 battery dominated by Apple's iPad.

The event was a party, rather than a traditional announcement, with a DJ spinning songs and bars and tables set up for cocktails. Company officials mingled and glad-handed with the crowd rather than taking to the podium with canned speeches.

But the PlayBook, due to go on sale April 19, faces an uphill battle, even though some early reviews have praised the user interface, based on software acquired when RIM bought QNX, a maker of operating systems for mobile devices.

The tablet sports a 1GHz dual-core processor, two high-resolution cameras -- one in front and one in back -- and micro-HDMI output. It's priced at $500 for a version with 16G bytes of storage, $600 for a 32G-byte version, and $700 for 64G-byte model.

On the software side, many early reviewers have cited a litany of shortcomings, the most egregious of which may be a lack of a built-in e-mail program -- the main feature that draws HP pavilion dv6000 Battery,Hp 484170-001 batteryprofessionals to the company's iconic BlackBerry smartphone. To do e-mail on the device, users have to establish a WiFi connection to the Internet and use a browser-based application like Gmail, or establish a Bluetooth link to a BlackBerry via a feature called Bridge. Via the Bridge function, users have access to all their BlackBerry apps.

The device weighs just under a pound and has a 7-inch screen, roughly half the area of an iPad screen. That, however, is one of the main selling points for Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis.

"I just love its form factor," Lazaridis said on the sidelines of the event. "It's so light I can put it in my pocket .... it's just the right size for me."

In a nod to the QNX-based operating system, Lazaridis emphasized the touch-screen interface's ability to allow users to smoothly move from one open app to another. "The way this thing multitasks, it's like one step ahead -- I can do things as fast as I can think," Lazaridis said.

But the PlayBook lacks what many users would consider basic features such as a built-in calendar, contacts database, and chat application. When the device goes on sale, there will be about 3,000 third-party apps available, compared to the 65,000 on the App Store for the iPad.

How Google’s Freewheeling Ecosytem Threatens the iPhone

Andy Rubin needed a hit. It was January 2009, three years since Google had bought the company he cofounded, a little startup called Android.

Rubin had created a slick operating system for mobile phones that allowed customers to surf the web, send email, play music, and install apps. He had hoped that Google’s money and power would help turn Android into a major force in the burgeoning smartphone industry. Instead, Android had been a disappointment. Despite months of press buildup, the first phone Acer aspire 5920 Battery to run the system, HTC’s T-Mobile G1, was greeted with tepid reviews and lackluster sales. Rubin had tried to find a bigger wireless carrier that would agree to partner with Android—he and his team, including Android cofounders Rich Miner and Nick Sears, had lobbied Verizon for the better part of a year—but without success. And then there was Android’s biggest competitor, the iPhone. Introduced in 2007, it had become an instant commercial and cultural phenomenon. Unless Rubin could come up with a breakthrough Android phone, and quick, he might have to concede the entire business to Steve Jobs.

Fortunately for Rubin, Sanjay Jha was in just as dire a position. Jha, the new co-CEO of Motorola, had been talking to Rubin for months, hoping to persuade him to let Motorola build the next Android phone. Once the dominant mobile device maker in the world, Motorola hadn’t had a major success since the Razr—in 2004. Jha had been hired in August 2008 to resurrect Motorola’s handset business, and he had pursued an all-or-nothing strategy, laying off thousands and betting Motorola’s future on his ability to build a hit Android phone.

Now Jha had come to Google headquarters to unveil his design—and it was impressive. Jha promised a device that would be far faster than any other smartphone. He said its touchscreen would have a higher resolution than the iPhone. He said it would come with Dell d830 Batteries a full keyboard, for customers who didn’t like the iPhone’s virtual keys. He promised a phone that was thin and sleek, one that could compete with the iPhone on pure aesthetics. And, thanks to his longstanding relationship with Verizon, he offered the potential of a partnership with the country’s then second-largest wireless carrier; in fact, Motorola and Verizon had already discussed building a smartphone together. “We were all kind of jazzed,” says Hiroshi Lockheimer, one of Rubin’s chief lieutenants, who was at the meeting. “I think we said OK on the spot.”

But that optimism faded a few months later, in the spring of 2009, when the first prototype arrived in the Android offices. To Rubin’s eyes, they looked Dell gd761 Battery nothing like the designs Jha had presented. Indeed, they were hideous. Yes, there is always a gap between a manufacturer’s sketches and the eventual prototype, but Rubin and his team had so much faith in Jha that they expected him to deliver a phone much closer to the one he had pitched. Despair set in. “It looked like a weapon. It was so sharp and jagged and full of hard lines. It looked like you could cut yourself on the edges,” says someone who saw the prototype. “We were really concerned. There were a lot of conversations where we asked, ‘Is this really the device we want to do? Should we try to talk Motorola out of it?’”

Top Power Tips To Solve Your IE 9 Problem

Not too long ago, we shared some of the most useful keyboard shortcuts for Internet Explorer 9. Now, the folks at Microsoft have compiled a whole slew of tips for IE9 users, from novices to seasoned surfers.

There are four categories at the moment -- Faster ways(Canon LP-E6 Digital Camera Battery) to get to your websites, Top keyboard shortcuts, Change and manage search providers, and Manage add-ons -- and there's also a good resource of videos that can walk you (or a newbie friend) through IE9's core features.

Most of the 'power tips' are fairly light on details at the moment -- the keyboard shortcut page only has seven shortcuts! -- but we're sure, by the time the browser is released, that it will grow into a sizable and comprehensive resource, just like the Windows 7 pages.

How do I install or uninstall Internet Explorer 9?

If you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7 on your computer, you can install Internet Explorer 9 to replace your existing Good camcorder battery version of Internet Explorer. After you install Internet Explorer 9, you can uninstall it to restore the previously installed version ofInternet Explorer.

Check the Internet Explorer 9 download page periodically for updates toInternet Explorer 9. If an update is available, repeat the installation process to install the latest version.

Why don't some websites display correctly in Internet Explorer 9?

Websites that were designed for earlier versions of Windows Internet Explorer might not display correctly in Internet Explorer 9. However, you can often improve how a website will look by using a feature called Compatibility View.

dell inspiron 5160 laptop battery

When you turn on Compatibility View, the website you're viewing will be displayed as if you were using an earlier version of Internet Explorer.

If Internet Explorer recognizes a webpage that isn't compatible, you'll see the Compatibility View(Discount laptop battery) button on the Address bar. To turn Compatibility View on, click theCompatibility View button to make the icon change from an outline Picture of the Compatibility View button (off) to a solid color Picture of the Compatibility View button (on).

From now on, whenever you visit this website, it will be displayed in Compatibility View. However, if the website receives updates to display correctly in the current version ofInternet Explorer, Compatibility View will automatically turn off.

9 things Steve Jobs has done to change the tech world forever

Steve Jobs is one of the more accomplished CEOs to ever work in the technology industry. He built a company from scratch into a household name and incidentally one of the greatest organizations in the history of American business. He also accomplished one of the rarest feats in business, coming back to rebuild the company he created when it was struggling years after he lost Asus a32-f3 Battery a boardroom power struggle.  Then he led the company to its most successful and wealthiest years to date. .

To say that Jobs’ contribution to the technology space has been huge is an understatement. The sheer number of contributions he has made is nothing short of incredible. But the time has come to at least highlight some of those contributions, and discuss how he has changed the tech world forever.

Read on to find out some—but not all—of the ways Steve Jobs has contributed his expertise to the tech world.

1. He co-founded Apple

One of Steve Jobs’ greatest contributions to the tech world is creating Apple. Little did he know when he co-founded Apple that the company would become such an integral part of the lives Dell studio 1735 battery of millions around the globe. If he had instead chosen to follow a different path, the world would be a much different place today. It’s debatable whether technology would have moved as far along as it has.
2. Design as a key differentiator
Throughout his career, Steve Jobs has put a premium on product design. He realizes that people are more likely to buy those things that catch their eye. He understood that the rest of the market didn’t necessarily have the eye for innovative design that he did. By using design to differentiate his products,Steve Jobs showed other companies in the industry (and perhaps some organizations outside of the tech sector) that aesthetic appeal really does matter to both consumers and enterprise customers alike.
3. A policy of secrecy works
Apple’s penchant for secrecy has helped the company become what it is today. Steve Jobs realizes that by not letting people see behind the curtain, they will be more likely to stay focused on Uniwill un755 BatteriesApple’s every move. Better, that focus means that customers’ attention is less likely to stray to competitors promoting their own similar products. Now, other firms, including Microsoft, Motorola, and Samsung are trying to follow Jobs’ lead and be more secretive. Going forward, many more firms will likely follow suit.
4. There really is money in hardware
When Microsoft became a technology giant, some wondered if any other company would ever overcome it. People around the globe said that software was the dominant force in technology, and nothing would change that. But Steve Jobs has proven those people wrong. By delivering compelling hardware, he has watched his firm’s market capitalization easily best Microsoft’s. Now, the market can’t help but wonder if hardware really reigns supreme in today’s tech world.
5. The death of CDs
When Apple first started as a computer company, few could have envisioned it revolutionizing the music business. But with the launch of the iPod and iTunes, it did just that. Steve Jobs saw an opportunity in digital content and he capitalized on it. By making iTunes so user friendly, he almost single-handedly ruined the market for CDs. The music industry is forever changed because of Steve Jobs.
6. Redefining smartphones
Apple certainly wasn’t the first company to jump on the touch screen bandwagon. But it’s indisputable that Steve Jobs was the first person to make touch screens appeal to a mass audience, thanks to his company’s iPhone. That device, which launched in 2007, threw entrenched competitors, including RIM, Nokia, and Microsoft, into a tailspin. And it prompted Google to try its luck in the smartphone space. Nowadays, if a smartphone doesn’t look and work like the iPhone, it will likely collect dust on store shelves.
7. Tablets can be a business model

dell inspiron 1525 laptop battery
For years, Microsoft and its vendor partners were trying to make tablets catch on with the mainstream. But for the most part, those devices only really appealed to medical professionals and other niche markets. With the launch of the iPad, all that has changed. In 2010 alone, Apple sold 15 million iPad units. Some analysts say Lenovo thinkpad t60 battery more than 50 million tablets will ship around the world this year. With a single device, Steve Jobs once again revolutionized a market.
8. There’s an app for that
When smartphones or tablets are being evaluated nowadays, consumers and even enterprise customers examine how many applications are available for a respective platform. Steve Jobs saw an opportunity with mobile apps and he took advantage of it in 2008. Since then, billions of apps have been downloaded from his marketplace and every other company in the market has created its own store just to stay relevant. Mobile apps are the future—and Steve Jobs can be thanked for that.
9. A look towards the future
Throughout the years, Steve Jobs has been willing to take chances. He doubled down on the mouse when few others saw potential in it. He brought USB to Macs before it really caught on. He tried something new in the smartphone market while other companies were making significant cash on old ideas. Simply put, Steve Jobs has the unique ability to evaluate current technologies, determine what the future looks like and get behind something that few others have the vision to seize upon. In most cases, those risks have changed the tech space in a dramatic way.

MeeGenius Brings Children's E-Books to Multiple Platforms

Despite the increasing popularity of e-books, children's literature - particularly picture books - has been slower to go digital. There are a number of obstacles in the way, most obviously the emphasis on colorful illustrations alongside the words. As many e-readers have black-and-white screens and as many formats focus primarily on digitizing the text, you're unlikely to find a great selection of children's e-lit in e-bookstores (although that is changing Uniwill un755 battery).

meegenius_mermaid.jpg

It's more common, perhaps, to see children's literature as apps, rather than e-books. Apps are full-color. They offer interactivity, with games and narration.

Those features are important, says David Park, a former tenure-track professor who's left that world to develop his children's e-book startup MeeGenius. Mindful of what parents are looking for, he asked about their interest in digital literature for their young kids. Many said that they weren't willing Asus batel80l9 Batteries,Asus batel80l6 Batteries pay for "just" a digital book. Parents wanted additional features: the ability to have the story read aloud, to have words highlighted as the story progressed, to have it personalized.

MeeGenius has done just this, digitizing children's stories - classic and new - and adding features that make reading along easier. The MeeGenius reading app is available for free, and there is a selection of both free and paid books (priced between $.99 and $2.99) to download.

MeeGenius is available across platforms: the web, iPhone, iPad, Google Chrome Web Store, and Google TV. Yes, Google TV. Park, a father of preschool age twins, says that he would often do development on the product on a large screen in the living room, and his children came to see books as just "another channel" on TV.Acer aspire 6935g Batteries

Microsoft has just released the official Bing app for iPad

Microsoft has just released the official Bing app for iPad on the App Store, making it the first Microsoft app for the iPad.

The app features the glorious slideshow of daily images similar to the website and iPhone app. The app is location aware, so it asks you for your location on launch and brings you your local weather, news, maps, movies, trends and finance at the bottom Dell inspiron 3500 d233xt batteryof the app. Tapping on each little section at the bottom takes you to a full-featured implementation where you can browse around.

Navigating through the app is in the form of stacks — somewhat similar to the Twitter for iPad app. Every new view loads on top of the current view from the right. To navigate back to the previous view, you swipe the view from left to right as if you’re sliding Dell latitude e6400 atg Batteries it off your way. To view it again, slide it again, this time from the right to left.

The Search bar is easily accessible at the top left of the screen. The app also features Voice commands, which work well, particularly considering my Indian accent.

The implementation of Trends in the app is particularly worth making note of. The app lists the trends for each day as a grid of photos, allowing you to travel back and view previous day’s trends. Tapping on each topic takes you to the results for that topic.

The app doesn’t seem to save the state if you leave it, but the Dell latitude e6400 battery tiny ‘Home’ button at the top changes to a sort of a “put back” button that you can tap and the app takes you back to where you left it.
